Technical Pen & Ink & Photoshop CS2
Originally done in Technical Pen & Ink with a Letraset border on Illustration Board; the overall size of this piece meant that even a 3x0 tip was too heavy for some of the lines. Enter Photoshop with pen tool and the ability to scan to a resolution of 1200dpi.The only remaining areas of the original drawing are the textured area of the water background and the shape and texture of the coral shelf. One of four pieces in this series. These were never printed as a set.

The only remaining areas of the original drawing are the textured area of the water background and the shape and texture of the coral shelf. I found that the stippling without the softening of the airbrushing gave a coarser effect than I desired; while the airbrushing alone had too great a disconnect from her tail. One of four pieces in this series. These were never printed as a set.

Originally rendered with Rapidographs on vellum. What I was trying to do here is transition between flat graphics inside the circle and fully shaded forms outside the circle. As I’ve mentioned before, I used this line art for my logo for a while.
One of a series of five pieces using this style and symbology based on occurrences described in the Bible's New Testament. This was a concept piece for a stained glass window, so it is a bit more colorful than historical documentation would warrant.

Fun with colors. Enjoy.

When I was asked to submit art to be part of a fantasy Mah Jong deck, years ago, this was the image that originally came to mind. I didn't achieve my goal at that time. Also, unfortunately the client who commissioned the pieces passed away before the project could be completed. It was time to go for it again. This is a personal portfolio piece.
I worked in Photoshop 7 with the use of one Painter 7 brush.
All crits and comments accepted.

This is to replace the lost piece that was commissioned to be part of a fantasy Mah Jong deck. Unfortunately, when the client who commissioned the pieces passed away before the project could be completed, the original was sold and I lost track of it. I wanted to see how well I could improve on the original image with digital media. This is a personal portfolio piece.
I worked in Photoshop 7 with the use of one Painter 7 brush.
As always, crits and comments accepted
This was done entirely with layered "color to transparent" gradients. Constraints: As the phoenix rises out of the flames, it will transform from a plasma state to a solid avian form; at the same time the colors must imply the transition of fire and increasing heat from the ground flames to it's white-hot breast.

I'm still not too fond of the left wing/tail solution.
Description from editor:
Damage Illustration: Time for some gore… we want people to realize that the universe is a seriously dangerous place. This could be tall (like the current one) or wide.

Created for Technicraft Design's Pax Draconis role playing game, a slightly different black and white version was used in the book.

The deadline for this was 31 January 2003.

Taking my courage firmly in both hands, here is my first image in this gallery. I would like to thank the guys who gave me such good advice about their eyes, back when this was a WIP.
Original: 1275 x 1650 x 300 ppi; Photoshop 5 & 7; stone texture photo taken for me by my daughter at the Getty Museum (a huge exterior facade stone).
The basic image was created for the art director at Technicraft Design. She liked the "couchant" hound while the editor wanted the standing hound for the Fera Vita supplement for the Pax Draconis role playing game. They bought both. The standing beast is to be used in the game book, and will be printed, like the rest of the beasties, in black and white. Yes, they didn't just grant me permission to post creature designs as the book was going to press, they flat out told me to do it.
All crits and comments will be accepted with appreciation.

Specifications:
1275 x 1650 x 300 ppi
Photoshop 5 & 7
Description from the editor:
The creature should weigh about 5 pounds, it is a pack/flock type hunter that injects it's prey with a neurotoxin via a needle/barb in the tip of it's tail.
The creature was originally created for Technicraft Design's Fera Vita supplement for the Pax Draconis role playing game. It was my call to make it look as cuddly as possible. This version corrects some technical layering issues of the previous versions, as well as improving the design and integration of the background environment elements.
All crits and comments are welcome, as usual.
